THIS WAY NORTH release new single 'Night Terrors'

Night Terrors: a sleeping disorder, consisting of episodes of screaming, intense fear and flailing while still asleep... Award winning Australian indie rock duo This Way North release their new single ‘Night Terrors’ and accompanying film clip, by Vanessa Cox (Gang of Youths, Suss C**ts, Great Aunt). Produced by Pony Face’s Shane O’Mara and Simon Bailey, the track expertly melds Leisha Jungalwalla’s signature, punchy slide guitar and Cat Leahy’s deep, raw drumming, to sonically capture the experience of night terrors.

Written late last year in an attempt to explore her nightly struggle with the sleeping disorder, Jungalwalla has drawn from a difficult period of her life, and the intersection between dreams and reality. The film clip was shot in Brisbane, in an old 1920’s artisan building overlooking the banks of the Brisbane River.

Director Vanessa Cox said of the song and filming of the clip: “The thing that really fascinated me in terms of the theme and the sound of the song is that despite being about the darker subject of night terrors the song still has an uplifting sound. Night terrors are something that both the band and myself have experienced and so I wanted to communicate to the audience what that feeling is like. For me a night terror often feels like there's a tremendous amount of weight on you and you're unable to break free. I wanted the clip to be quite dark and still for the quieter parts of the song but I also felt that supporting the upbeat chorus with light and movement would work well to give a contrast from the feeling of a night terror and the upbeat complexities of the track.”

Dubbed “the ones to watch” by The Age Music Victoria awards, This Way North are turning heads with their explosive sound, and this song is no exception. The song pounds out of the first chorus, tightly wound and edgy as it drives relentlessly forward. Jungawalla’s vocal is exposed and vulnerable, sitting effortlessly above Leahy’s indomitable drumming, in an infectious arrangement that beckons you in at every step.

In a special event, the girls will also be officially launching the new single with an advanced screening of a mini documentary by Chris Franklin about their musical journey and being a hardworking independent band following their dreams. They will play live at Stay Gold on Sydney Rd, Brunswick on Friday 14th June with support from Victorian Surf Coast duo Jack The Fox.

'Night Terrors' is available to stream and download from Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, Bandcamp and YouTube here.
